MTB Rider with Goggles

Why We Ride with Photochromatic Lenses

Photochromatic lenses aren’t the standard in mountain bike goggles. There’s a lingering belief that they can’t keep up with fast-changing light on the trail—that the transition is too slow. But that hasn’t been our experience.

In real-world riding, you’re not moving from darkness to full sun. You’re navigating filtered light through trees, sudden clearings, cloud cover, and the low, shifting light of early morning or late day. It’s a constant mix of shade and exposure—often changing moment to moment. And most riders wear full-face helmets with visors, which already reduce direct sunlight and keep the lens in partial shade. That means photochromatic lenses rarely reach their darkest tint. That’s what makes them effective. Instead of making extreme shifts, they hover in a functional range—adjusting just enough to reduce strain and keep your eyes comfortable.

That’s why we built the Soprism Goggles around a high-performance photochromatic lens system. We chose a light transmission range of 0–3, tuned to work across a wide span of riding conditions. The lens doesn’t need to go completely clear or overly dark. It simply adapts—subtly and continuously—so you can stay focused on the ride. It’s not about dramatic transitions. It’s about smooth visibility that allows you to retain your focus.

Beyond the lens, the Soprism is built for long-term use and comfort. The frame resists warping to hold its shape. A triple-layer face foam wicks sweat and dries quickly, keeping you comfortable on big climbs and long descents. A wide, 45mm silicone-backed strap stays put without over-tightening. And the whole design is minimal–paired with a removable nose guard for gravel and sun protection.

We’ve tested the Soprism across seasons, regions, and trail types. And like everything we make, we’ll keep refining it based on what we learn. But one thing is clear: photochromatic lenses, when designed with intention, aren’t just a convenience—they’re a practical, all-conditions solution for everyday riding.
